The Sunset Bar

Bag of Bones

The Sunset Bar is a lakeside establishment reached by a long dock extending from The Street. During the violent storm at the novel’s climax, its damaged walkway becomes the setting for Kyra’s peril, Rogette’s fall into the lake, and the brief supernatural appearance of Mattie. The bar’s porch is where Kyra reaches safety, and where Michael finds and comforts her.

Setting and Approach

The Sunset Bar stands across the water from the shore, connected to it by a dock at least seventy feet long and perhaps as much as a hundred. In calmer weather, the narrator imagines it as a place for a leisurely walk with a companion; the storm transforms that ordinary route into an unstable passage. Its rail is gone, boards have broken away, and the remaining slatted walkway twists and rises over the water.

The dock’s supports are empty steel drums, some of which have come loose and are drifting off. Gaps in the boards expose the water below, while waves wash across the partly submerged walkway. These details make the approach to The Sunset Bar a direct physical danger rather than a dependable link between shore and destination.

The Storm and Kyra’s Flight

As the storm tears through the area, Kyra is already partway along the dock while Rogette approaches her from the shore. Kyra refuses to return with her and backs away along the slick, moving boards. With no rail and several broken sections between her and shore, a misstep could send her into the lake. A wave strikes the dock and raises water around the gap where some of its supporting barrels have come loose.

When a wave lifts and drops the walkway, Rogette goes over its side. Kyra, farther along the dock, is thrown toward The Sunset Bar and lands sprawled on its porch. The same storm-damaged structure that had put her in immediate danger thus carries her to temporary safety. Michael cautiously crosses the wavering dock after her and takes her in his arms; she is shivering, and tells him that Mattie came.

Mattie’s Appearance and the Bar’s Role

Before Kyra reaches the porch, the water surging through the broken dock takes on a twisting, helix-like form. It resolves into Mattie’s apparition, recognizable by the distinctive clothes she wore. As Rogette falls and Kyra is flung onto the porch, the apparition remains on the dock and looks toward Michael, moving her lips though he cannot understand what she is saying.

The scene continues the novel’s connection between Dark Score Lake and the dead. Mattie’s figure appears in the water, and Kyra tries to embrace her; the apparition vanishes, leaving only water across the boards and dripping through their cracks into the lake. From The Sunset Bar’s porch, Kyra can call for her mother, but cannot hold on to the figure. Michael witnesses the encounter and confirms to Kyra that he saw Mattie too.

Narrative Significance

The Sunset Bar is more than the endpoint of a lakeside walk in this scene: its dock concentrates the storm’s physical threat, while the water around it becomes the medium for Mattie’s supernatural return. The place’s ordinary social associations give way to a precarious crossing, with the missing rail, loose drums, and broken boards shaping the action. Yet the unstable dock also delivers Kyra to the bar’s porch, where Michael can reach her. The sequence therefore joins danger, apparition, and rescue in one sharply defined setting, ending not with Kyra alone on the water but with her safe in Michael’s arms.
